Cricinfo Changes

Cricinfo has changed.

I am sure I’m not the only one who went over to cricinfo.com and had to make sure you hadn’t arrived at the wrong destination.

It is best described as the old cricinfo pimped out. The old website was a dino in terms of website design. It had a simple left panel navigation and it was pretty easy to use.

The new one is sleeker, with uber cool tabbed menus and the lot.

Sambit Bal, ol’ editor and chief, says its a celebration of content. We are sure it is.

From the lighter scorecards to the gawdy black main news content area.We like the new look. Its web 2.0.(I’m not sure if it really is but it sounds cool to say that)

It makes cricinfo look modern and with 2020 changing the world game, it was only a matter of time before our staple cricinfo took on a new direction too.

Of course we have been spared the trouble of typing in espncricinfo.com but we might as well now that it covers approximately 5/10ths the page!

Some people are complaining about the black main news area. I think its a cool contrast to the rest of the page and makes it pop. Plus it might also be cricinfos way of saving more energy. Because we all know a black page takes up less energy to be displayed.

Unfortunately what really hurt my eyes, and possibly an oversight on Sambit and Co’s celebration of content is Brett Lee glaring at us wearing a weird looking black glove, on the front page.

No publishing body, should ever stoop to such lows.

Lee was cool in 2005, but he seems to have gotten on my wrong side along the way and seems to annoy me every time I see him. This may or may not have anything to do with him trying to cover up his receding hair line with the ol ‘tin tin’ do.

We’ve all tried it Brett. And it doesn’t work.

It just makes you look like you were in the wrong place at the wrong time in ‘Something about Mary.’

Besides that top job cricinfo.

Well I usually don’t whine about changes. Once FB changed everyone was so screaming, but now they’re used to it. New crapinfo looks cool, except the black background. I think it’s more a problem with me. I never like reading on a black background. Other than that the new look is cool indeed.

  3. The new cricinfo is all cluttered, just like how Cricket365 is. I’m not the type who really hates change (love T20 and new FB from the start), but everything seems to be way too disorganised

    Hi damiths
was thinking of you when I read the recent news from aus. Hope its been OK where you are.

Being an infrequent visitor to Cricinfo, I never got attached to the ‘old look’. I am in two minds about the CricInfo ‘new look’.

I had always found it difficult to read the old site.

I like the new layout on a widened effective text area. But I still find it difficult to read. I agree with Cricket Tragic, they left it cluttered. Too much happening all over the page. A missed opportunity?

I understand the black backdrop to photos and videos, but it has been left as a lonely blob; does not go with the rest of the page.

What does strike as crisp and new is the ESPN logo.

Sach> I kinda like the black, but I suspsect cricinfo will change it soon.

Irrimitesy> Interesting that a post about Brett Lee should get you on here. Looks like the flyslips reach is far and wide!

CricTragic> Well I guess I can see how you would see it as being cluttered, But I think with practice you should be fine !

Sach> I dint click on the link, did you ?

Fark> Cheers. Will take a look at that link.

China> What news are you referring to? The attack on Indians ? Ya its bad luck, its actually pretty messed up. But I am safe, as long as I can prove I am not Indian I should be alright.

Again, I trust with more experience you will also learn to love the new cricinfo.

Sam> I think so too. I love tabs. And there are plenty of those.

    Problems with the new Cricinfo:

    1. The inch or so of space on the left and right hand sides; why? This could just be my browser (Firefox 3) but something as big as Cricinfo should make sure that their site works and looks correct in IE, Firefox and Safari as an absolute minimum. If this is an intentional thing… then it looks silly. Unless they’re working in a fixed-width thing or something.

    2. Menus which automatically drop down when you move the mouse over them; I’ve always hated this on websites and half the time I end up clicking on something I didn’t want.

    3. Everything has been organised into neat little modules (News, Specials, Polls etc.) which is fine in theory but doesn’t really work unless you have the option like the BBC website to drag the modules around the page and hide ones you don’t want. It also doesn’t work because once you get to the bottom of the ‘Sponsored links’ box, nothing lines up any more and all that space at the bottom of the page looks messy.

    4. The ‘Tools’ don’t need a box all of their own; it’s not the same width as anything else and so sticks out like a sore thumb. The various options on there could be integrated into a simple text menu at the top or bottom of the page (probably the top, given it has things like widgets and podcasts in it).

Apart from that, I do like the black news/photos/video box. It stands out nicely.
