Monday holiday

Its a Monday in Colombo but the Thomians wont be going to school.

The people in charge have declared it a holiday for the boys from Mt. Lavinia after their team put in a sensational performance to save the big match and avoid defeat.

When the Thomians were bowled out for 99 in the middle of the 2nd day, there was only going to be one winner. At 39-2 in the 2nd innings, the much expected win for the Royalists  was at touching distance.

Then it came, the fucken Thomian grit that every Royalist, since and hence fears, reared its magical head and put everything in to near equilibrium.

209 runs were added for the 3rd wicket. The captain ended up with a century. A brave opener, Saleem, entered into Roy-Tho folklore.

But when day 2 ended, the Thomians were only ahead on double figures, and when the skipper fell early on day 3, Royal were back on top.

Saleem just wouldn’t let up, he ended with 165 in 545 mins. He had seen off the new ball, smashed the old one, belted the 2nd new ball and saved his team from a certain loss.

This was so good it reminded me of Sri Lankas escape at Lords a few years ago.

For the Royalists, this was probably one of their biggest chances to win the big match, and they were without a doubt the team to beat this season.

But while the Royalists will be nursing their pride in class today, the Thomians will be enjoy a beer or having an ice cream or whatever the hell those lads from Mount do for fun.

Yeah I too was thinking of that Lords game! They call it the “Great Escape” and this was surely that! What a fight back indeed! A game for the “Cricket” lovers!

At the risk of sounding like a spoilt sport, things would have been different had he been given out, Run Out on 99 as he should have. But as they say…. look at the scorebook!

Sach> Thomians love for ice cream and luminous colored tshirts is legendary.

Rat> Really ? He was run out on 99 and not given ? Dont they have a 3rd umpire for this ?

In the end it was a incredible game and the Thomians deserve all the praise. We let it slip.

    Sach> Feeling alright there?
