Test match preparations, how long is good enough?

Not 48 hours. According to Wing Commander Strauss.

The new English captain, said of Chris Gayle’s arrival only 2 days prior to the 1st test from the IPL, as being ‘not on’ and that he wouldn’t want his  players arriving as late as that.

Of course Strauss had nothing to worry about given that Flintoff,  Peitersen and co either hobbled home or snuck in through the back door following their less than spectacular debut at the IPL.

Chris Gayle at the time responded with a cutting ‘Mind your own Business Wing Commander’ line and politely asked Strauss  ‘not to worry about him or the West Indies.’

Which is likely given that WI lost inside 3 days and Gayle scored 28 and 0.

And how did Strauss fair? Well he scored 16 and 14*.

Strauss wins by 2 runs, so it is abundantly clear that 48 hour preparations simply do not work.
